Machine operators in mining environments are exposed to hazardous particulates, such as respirable crystalline silica (quartz dust) and diesel particulate matter (DPM), that are dangerous to physical health and a risk to productivity.

Dust is an unavoidable byproduct of crushing, drilling, and blasting. However, when that dust contains silica, it becomes a carcinogen. Respirable crystalline silica is 100 times smaller than ordinary sand and, when inhaled, it embeds into lung tissue, leading to silicosis, which is a progressive, incurable lung disease.

In addition, diesel engines powering haul trucks and excavators release diesel motor emissions (DME), a complex mixture of gases and soot, classified by the World Health Organisation as a group 1 carcinogen, in the same category as asbestos and arsenic.

"While standard filters may trap larger dirt particles, they can allow dangerous nano-particles to pass through into the operator's breathing zone. This is where advanced filtration technology becomes a necessity,” asserts Probe IMT CEO Gert Roselt.

Roselt explains that, while the introduction of ISO 23875 has created a unified international standard for air quality control systems in operator enclosures, it is not a legally mandated regulation in South Africa.

He notes, however, that many global mining companies operating in South Africa voluntarily adopt ISO 23875 to align with international safety standards and improve workplace conditions.

South Africa's Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and other occupational health and safety regulations also place a strong emphasis on protecting workers from airborne hazards such as silica dust and diesel emissions, Roselt continues, adding that BMAir systems are fully compliant with MSHA and ISO 23875 safety standards.
